New Janus Core President Talks Loyalty, Longevity and Lessons Learned

Sep 11, 2025

Jason Williams knows what it takes for large public companies to be successful . Before joining Janus International Group as president in May 2025, he was president of the security business at Fortune Brands Innovations—an American manufacturer of home and security products. His experience also includes serving as president of Smart Residential for ASSA ABLOY, GM of its Yale Residential brand and senior product manager at Black and Decker. Read on to hear what he’s most excited about in his new role, why he’s so impressed with Janus employees and how the company is poised to help self-storage and commercial customers succeed in today’s business climate.

Q; How does your experience translate into your new role here at Janus?

Jason Williams: I have extensive experience building teams, putting product strategy in place and growing the business through new product development partnerships. And while I’m new to self-storage, I’m not new to growing multi-billion dollar companies. In the last 20 years, I learned what it takes to run a big company and what it takes to be successful. Janus is on that path of scaling—our revenue, our processes and our teams.  I hope to bring a new perspective that will help accelerate the process.  But I realize that can’t be done blindly.  Janus has been an extremely successful company, and it’s important that we protect what’s special about the organization along the journey.

Q: What are you most excited about as the new president?

Jason Williams: Personally, I’ve been in the access control space for so long, so it’s exciting to get into a new world, into the self-storage space. And when I started doing research into Janus, the story and pedigree as an industry leader amazed me.  Janus has grown into the market leader, and I’m excited to be a part of the future as we focus on accelerating growth and helping self-storage operators find ways to do more with less.

Three or four months ago as I was getting up to speed on Janus, I rented a storage unit from a customer to see the experience for myself. I never saw an employee because I was able to do it all online or with the app I downloaded. The lock was there when I got there. And when I moved out a few months later, I never needed to interact with any employees.  It was seamless. This unmanned facility experience is what many of our customers want to create because consumers expect it and operators need it to operate more efficiently and reduce costs. My biggest pain point during the process was having to share a physical key with others that needed to get into the facility, and, of course, Janus has a solution for that with the Nokē Smart Entry system providing digital key sharing.

Q: In your conversations with customers, what has stood out to you the most?

Jason Williams: Their loyalty. What I’ve repeatedly heard from customers is that they recognize that Janus is with them through thick and thin to get the job done. They know they can count on us to get in there, do the job at the price we said we would and get it done on time, every time. Customers also know that new competitors are entering the self-storage space, but they’re not willing to forfeit the decades of experience we bring to the table. They won’t inject all that risk into their projects even if it means maybe spending a bit less on their doors and hallways. Because what looks like small savings are quickly eaten up when your project is delayed, unfinished or costs you more in maintenance because the product isn’t as top of the line as we produce at Janus. They know Janus will never walk away from a job without completing it no matter what issues crop up.

Q: What’s impressed you the most about the employees at Janus?

Jason Williams: Number one is longevity. It’s not uncommon to sit down and talk to somebody who has worked at Janus for 10, 15 or 20 years—and that amount of institutional and industry knowledge within our walls is hard to beat. Number two is the passion that employees have about Janus and the self-storage industry. As we continue to grow and bring in new employees, we’ll be focused on how to cultivate that same level of passion.

Q: Can you share what’s coming down the pike for customers?

Jason Williams: We’re continuing to expand beyond doors and hallways to offer an entire family of the industry’s most respected brands within our portfolio. This allows us to guide self-storage and commercial operators from bid to delivery with robust smart building solutions from BETCO, innovative roll-up, high-performance and enhanced security doors, the industry’s most advanced smart access control technology, state-of-the-art security and gates, door replacement, retrofitting and restoration services, relocatable storage units and facility maintenance and improvement programs.

And the last point of facility maintenance is a big one as facilities look for creative ways to get things done while reducing labor. When your building is up and running and you don’t want to have people on staff dedicated to regular upkeep, we offer a service called Facilitate that can fill that void by providing facility maintenance to any of our customers within the Janus family of brands.

Q: Is there one lesson that's shaped the approach you use in leadership today?

Jason Williams: My leadership style has always been inclusive, but leading a business through COVID really changed my perspective on what I prioritize. I was running the Yale business and had a team in San Francisco, a team in Connecticut, and I was remote in Atlanta. Normally, I would travel to those offices on a regular basis but couldn’t do that during COVID. Pre-COVID, mostly what went through my mind was pushing things along and getting to the next business problem to solve. What COVID pushed me to do -- and I'm thankful for this -- was to look at the people who are making everything happen and make sure that they're happy and healthy. And by becoming more empathetic, I feel like I became a much better leader.

Q: If we looked at your calendar, what's one recurring meeting that you never skip and why would that be?

Jason Williams: My personal calendar is all over the place with two kids and their sports, and I never miss a game or a tournament. From a professional perspective, my calendar has lots of one-on-one meetings on Mondays or Fridays. And I do everything in my power to maintain those checkpoints with everybody on my team to make sure I see how they’re doing and make sure they have that set time to check in and get any help they may need from me.  It also gives me an opportunity to keep my finger on the pulse of the organization. I want my team to know that what they’re doing is important, and so are they.
