How to Remotely Open Gates and Access Points

This article covers how to locate and operate entry points, use hold-open options, and troubleshoot offline devices before contacting support.

How to Remotely Open Gates and Access Points

The Remote Open feature allows you to control gates and access points at your facility directly from the Web Portal. Whether you're letting in a vendor or managing access remotely, this tool gives you full control with just a few clicks.

How to Access Remote Open

  • From the web portal, click Facilities in the left-hand navigation bar.
  • This will take you to the new Facilities page.
  • Click the Remote Open icon to control your facility's gates and access points.

  • A pop-up window will appear, listing all Entries at your facility in alphabetical order.

Using the Entry List and Search

  • You can either scroll or use the search function to locate a specific entry point.

Opening a Gate or Door

  • To open an entry point, click the Open button on the right-hand side.

Once clicked, the dropdown will open up four remote open options.

    • Some entry points will only show the Open button without a dropdown due to device-specific requirements.

Remote Open Options Explained

  • Quick Open: Opens the entry point for a short time and then closes automatically.

  • Hold Open: Keeps the entry point open indefinitely until manually closed.

  • Set a Time: Opens the entry point for a specified duration.

  • Set a Schedule: Allows you to schedule opening and closing times, including a repeating schedule option.

Troubleshooting: Why the Open Button May Be Unavailable

  • If the Open button is greyed out, that means the entry point is offline and unreachable by the Nokē system.
What to Do If an Entry Point Is Offline (Before Contacting Support)

If an entry point appears offline in the portal, try the following steps before reaching out to support:

  • Reboot the Gate:
From the My Facilities page, check the Entry Alerts section. If a device is offline, it will appear in the list. Click the Entry Alerts widget, then in the pop-up window, click the Reboot button.
  • Check the Internet Connection at the Facility
Make sure the facility has an active internet connection. No internet = no communication with the entry device.
  • Inspect the Network Switch (POE Switch)
Look for lights on the switch to confirm it’s getting power and sending data. No lights might mean it's unplugged or has lost power.
  • Test the Network with a Laptop
If you can, plug a laptop directly into the switch using a Cat 6 ethernet cable to see if it gets a connection. This helps confirm whether the switch is working.
  • Power Cycle the Gateways
Unplug and replug the Cat 6 cables going into each port on the switch. This resets the connection.
  • Wait and Check
Give it a few minutes, then check the portal to see if the entry point is back online (i.e. if remote open is available again).
